When you first set up units like the Garmin Nuvi GPS, Magellan GPS or the TOMTOM GPS , there will be a certain number of parameters that you will need to program into the unit. Most of which depend on your driving habits, like the shortest time versus the shortest route. One bit of advice that I would like to extend here concerns safety when programming in your home address in you GPS unit. When you program in your home address (usually one of the first addresses that’s ever programmed in your Vehicle GPS) don’t label it as “Home”.If you go somewhere where a valet or someone else parks your car, all they have to do is look up “Home” in your GPS and call one of their “friends” and let them know that no one is “home” and the pickings should be easy.Don’t leave your GPS portable in your car either as they are an easy target for thieves.I learned the hard way with my first radar detector and CB radio.Always program your GPS navigator prior to taking to the road.If you need to make corrections, pull over and make them while stopped.Safety first and you’ll enjoy your Global Positioning system unit for years to come.
